What is CASS processing and why does it matter?
CASS (Coding Accuracy Support System) processing standardizes and validates each address and appends the ZIP+4 and delivery point information needed for a valid Intelligent Mail barcode. Automation prices require CASS-processed addresses. Plavidian runs the list through CASS as part of mailing analysis. See DMM 602.
ZIP+4 and delivery point
The ZIP+4 code identifies a small delivery segment; the delivery point adds the final digits that make the barcode route to an exact address. These come from CASS processing and are required for the Intelligent Mail barcode that earns automation prices. See DMM 602 and 708.
What is the Move Update requirement?
Move Update keeps addresses current against people who have moved. Mailings claiming presort or automation prices for First-Class Mail and USPS Marketing Mail must meet Move Update using an approved method (commonly NCOALink) within 95 days before the mailing date. Noncompliance can trigger assessments and loss of the discount. Plavidian handles Move Update as part of processing. See DMM 233, 243, and 602.
What do ancillary service endorsements do?
Endorsements such as "Address Service Requested" or "Return Service Requested" tell USPS what to do with undeliverable pieces (forward, return, or provide a new address). Marketing Mail does not include forwarding or return unless an endorsement is used and the associated fee paid. Placement and wording rules apply. See DMM 507.
Address block placement (letters)
For automation letters, the address and barcode must sit in the readable zone with a clear area around the barcode, and the address must be parallel to the long edge. The barcode clear zone and OCR read area cannot contain interfering graphics. Exact zones are in DMM 202 and 708; Plavidian's prepress checks these. Flats use a different standard: the address goes in the top half of the piece and may be parallel or perpendicular to the short top edge. See Where does the address go on a flat.
Why list quality drives price
A clean, CASS-processed, Move-Update-compliant list with valid ZIP+4 and delivery point data is what makes a mailing automation-eligible. A dirty list forces higher prices and risks undeliverable pieces. The Mailing Analysis tool reports what a given list qualifies for before a job is created.
